Up until a couple months ago, I had never even heard of nutritional yeast. After a lot of research on veganism, looking at different blogs, recipes, and websites, I found out why nutritional yeast is a great addition to a vegan diet (or any diet for that matter). Not only does this ingredient add a cheesy taste to your dishes, it also adds essential nutrients including vitamin B12, and protein.
The first time trying nutritional yeast, I put it into my pasta sauce and it added a nice cheesy flavour. It can also be used as a popcorn topping, added to any sauce, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, perogie filling, and cooked in polenta. You can find countless recipes online using nutritional yeast; I think it’s definitely a great ingredient to have on hand at all times.
-Not all nutritional yeast contains B12, and some brands contain whey, making it not vegan. Be sure to read the labels.
-It can be found at health food stores, and bulk food stores.
-It comes in flakes or powder form.
-It has a cheesy, and nutty flavour.
